In the Details

I will go out on a limb and say one thing has happened to every woman at some point in her life. You've gotten what you considered to be "all dressed up" for a special occasion or event only to arrive there and feel under-dolled or see photos later and regret not having gone the extra mile to polish off your look. If you want to look like you've gone the extra mile, you have to go it. I'll admit, it has happened to me more than once. I've even felt it passing my neighbor outside, both of us in sweats. My point -- you can always embellish.

So, I thought I'd share a few finishers that ensure I achieve the styling I want every time.

The nails
If you've known me for some years, you know that I am easily considered fanatical about how my nails look. Never underestimate the effect of raggedy nail beds on your presentation. That doesn't mean you need anything elaborate; a fresh manicure (and pedicure!) will suffice.

Accessories, accessories, accessories!
Brighten things up! If the only thing in your jewelry box is an assemblage of pieces your significant other has given you, you're living beneath your privilege. Stores like H&M, Forever 21, Macy's and The Icing are perfect for giving you fun and festive pieces to take your look to the next level. Costume jewelry has never been more fashionable. You can never have too much.

Makeup=A touch of glamor
I don't know how many times I've heard women speak from a stance of being "low maintenance" as a way of justifying being completely anti-makeup. To that I say, again, you're living beneath your privilege. I suggest becoming familiar and comfortable with it as a tool of enhancement. You can look natural and add a little glamor to your usual routine. And you may be surprised at how much you like a little color.

The Shoe Game
This one was like an epiphany for me. Don't just shop for shoes when you want to pair them with something specific at a moment's notice. It a sure recipe for frustration. I won't say become a shoe horse, but I will say diversify. And diversify outside of your comfort zone to other colors and styles. The bonus -- even outside of special occasions --  you will open up your everyday wardrobe.

Intimates
Hopefully you haven't written these off ... repeat after me: Slips and shapewear. Good foundational pieces alleviate panty lines, bulges, ripples and everything else that can derail a stellar look. Get familiar, if you're thinking you don't need them.

Feel good, look good
Before any major event, I cut out breads, pasta and carbonated drinks. My aim is to minimize any bloating and unwanted break outs. It works.

  1. Great post ... making my way through the list ~ better at some more than others :-). Time to venture into the "intimates" arena (I HATE slips but definitely could use some fabulous shapewear).
