MVL Exclusive: TWC's Erika Nuri

August 04, 2010

By Katrice
I felt kindred with Erika Nuri the moment I found out about her affinity for writing songs in the car. She asks herself, "what do I want to hear and drive to;" I imagine what I want to sing to. The difference -- her day job feeds my hobby. Nuri, co-founder of The Writing Camp -- a buzzworthy songwriting collective responsible for series of hits, has penned songs for Jason Derulo, The Pussycat Dolls, Brandy and Enrique Iglesias, and co-wrote Fantasia's #1 Billboard single “When I See You." Hers is a name you should know. So, I'm jumping on the opportunity to get the inside track -- on her approach to style, of course.

What period of style do you best identify with?
I love the style of the '40s. I think the styles were very clean, feminine and sexy. I love finger waves and pin curls. I love the hats and the clothes look glamorous.

Who is your biggest style influence or inspiration?
I usually like to dress casual in jeans, sandals or sneakers when I'm working, but I love dressing up for special events. Halle Berry always looks amazing in anything she wears. I love Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Valentino and Elie Saab.
What's your must-have of the moment?
I'm addicted to gel nails right now. I also love my new Balenciaga Perfume that I just bought in Paris, and I have to have a variety of bracelets to wear everyday.

If you could have your own line, what would you design?
I love lingerie and shoes, and would love to design my own lingerie line. I have spent so much money on Victoria Secret in the past 10 years ... it's crazy.
How do you keep your gorgeous curls so lush?
I use Mixed Chicks shampoo and conditioner or Pantene and a really cheap gel called Isoplus in my hair everyday. It's the only gel that keeps my curls in place without getting frizzy. I also use MoroccanOil once every week. I don't spend a lot of time on my hair. My curls are natural so as long as I keep my hair conditioned it is easy to do everyday.

What are your beauty essentials?
Lots of sleep, water, Mac Plushglass in Ample Pink, Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick, Mixed Chicks Hair Products and Boots Body Lotion.

How do you keep things fresh with your hectic schedule?
I try to just focus on the task that I need to accomplish that particular day. If I start thinking about my whole week, I can get overwhelmed. I work out at the gym 4-5 times a week in the morning. That keeps me balanced and energized. I also make sure that I take the time to do things that I enjoy other than writing songs. I like to go hiking and bike riding on the beach, and reading a great book is my favorite way to chill out.
