Sometimes, a Sacrifice

My pastors have been talking a lot recently about making sure the environment around you is conducive to you being at your best spiritually. One Sunday, there was even a sermon about separating ourselves from close friends and family members who had become a distraction that was holding up our progress in some pertinent area of our pursuits in life — whether they be spiritual or natural. Rarely, is it easy to sever ties with people you love. I had to make a tough decision that Sunday and what I knew was right to do led me to an even tougher resolve. But, I did it for the sake of my gift. It certainly was among the most profound decisions I've made thus far in my life. I thought of it in an anecdotal way: There were things around our home when we were growing up that were very valuable to my mom. She didn't have them just laying out and around in jeopardy, and some things even required safe keeping. She protected what was precious and taught us to value the things that she invested in. It's the same way with God. This morning, the thought came into my mind — your gift can be so precious that because you have the wrong people around it, God will not allow it to come to full manifestation.

And all I could say was, "Amen."
