On Deck: SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie

I'm always searching for products that give my hair good moisture and hydration. Since learning that those are two totally separate hair needs, my natural has made so much more sense to me. I started out using various hair lotions, which sufficed for a while because I figured, as long as my hair didn't look dry, I was good. I tried a lot of products before settling on one that actually gave my afro a nice sheen with minimal use and without the greasy feel. But! I was still missing the moisture.

Months ago, Felicia Leatherwood {of the Loving Your Hair With Natural Care Workshop} suggested I try SheaMoisture's products. I made a mental note {just because I force myself to use up the products I have before hauling in more}. And finally, two weeks ago, I needed something to use for my dry twist outs so the SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie was on deck.

My process: Wash, steam, and then apply a leave-in conditioner and allow my hair to air dry. Once dried, I do a dry twist out by fingerparting my hair and applying a dab of product to each small section before twisting.

When I took my hair down the next morning, it was noticeably less shrunken than normal and felt ultra soft. I smoothed a little olive oil through it and threw on a headband -- my habit when the shape isn't exactly what I want to start. But, by the end of the day, my twist out had relaxed into my usual wild and textured afro. The next day, after sleeping in a satin bonnet, my hair looked even better. #Love

Of note: I'd suggest this product for just about anyone with hair similar to my texture. Most importantly, my hair never lost the softness that I noticed at the onset and the maintained much of the definition. That was exciting considering it only cost me $9.99. However, I will need to use my trusty carrot oil or mango butter with it to be sure that there is some luster. Also, a little of the Smoothie goes a long way; too much of it will leave an obvious residue on your hair.

Get it at Walgreen's or Target.

  1. My BFF recommended this and the Curl & Style Milk for the wet n' go look. Like you, I have too many products to buy more until I find a use for the ones I have already. I do like the Curl & Style Milk though. Now that the YOU have recommended the smoothie, I will have to check it out. Thanks for always sharing your process with us, lets have a workshop when I return to Atlanta (seriously). - neb
