On Deck: YouVersion Bible App

February 05, 2013

By Katrice

I always see people using their tablets and mobile devices for scripture reading during Bible Study and other services at church. I resisted doing the same because I like to go between my Bible and paper to take notes. But, a few weeks ago, my pastor switched to the Amplified translation of the Bible to further expound upon a point he was making, and I saw others around me scrolling on their devices. I only had my King James Version Bible so, I decided to check the YouVersion Bible app I had downloaded onto my Droid DNA to see if I had to option to change versions, and it did. Ah! I've been missing out.

I downloaded the free app as soon as I got the phone for the daily reading plan and had been using it for that only, which by itself is ultra handy. However, I hadn't taken the time to really explore the rest of it's capabilities. YouVersion's Bible app has hundreds of Bible versions and languages, highlighting, bookmarking and note taking tools, and thankfully can be used without Wi-Fi. I was loving it simply for it's ability to read scriptures out loud and for the daily reminder that pops up asking if I have five minutes to read my Bible. Love that. I'm glad I realize now that it's so much more.

Are you using a great Bible app?

  2. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to using the bible or using a device at church. How do I know you aren't checking your twitter feed at the same time! (Are you sending text messages in church on your tablet!!) Back in the day you would get swatted if you even looked like you were going in your pock-a-book! Granny was not having that! That is for show! Don't put nothing in it! Certainly Gran is screaming, that aint nothing but the Devil, Lawd Jesus!

But, I guess it truly doesn't take away from the scripture. Its more accessible, more realistic, faster and the fact that it encourages you to read your bible, or listen, possibly Gran might not be too upset with me about it!

    Interesting to say the least.

    1. I feel the same way, Kay. I still will carry my Bible, but I was so happy to see the other translations that I can also access during Bible Study or in my own time at home.

  3. I LOVE the YouVersion Bible app!!! The daily scripture, various Bible versions, and ability to bookmark and/or take notes are fantastic. However, you must try the devotional and/or Bible plans. I'm just about finishing up a 365 day plan from Joyce Meyer, and I've done several others.

I'll always LOVE my hardback Bible! When I study scripture, I still write in it and everything, but the app is a blessing too.
