Styling Curve

By Katrice

My best friend is one of the most stylish women I know. She's fearless when it comes to color and unapologetically funky. Her accessories are an immediate conversation starter most days. Her hair -- platinum, mahogany brown, auburn, she's tried them all and done them well. And so I felt a crazy mixture of excitement and jitters when she asked me for my take on a daytime to downtime look for plus-size women. Her response: Why be unnerved? Being curvy is a reality but ignorance has made it taboo. That, somehow, was all I needed to hear.

MVL Radar: Dolce & Gabbana, rose the one

By Katrice

I haven't smelled a perfume in a long while that left a vivid scent memory. That usually only happens to me with scents that have some nostalgia tied to them. DOLCE & GABBANA's rose the one left is destined to mark space and time ... with little more that my folding back the sample flap. Delicately floral, the fusion of citrus and musk are so profoundly brilliant and feminine and romantic that I imagine it eclipsing everything else in my scent chest. D&G lures you with fresh hints of pink grapefruit and mandarin amidst the softness of peonies and roses, and sealed with a warm musk. One spritz, and people will definitely love to smell you coming and going.

ORS, The Gift That Keeps on Giving

By Katrice

A friend told me about Organic Root Stimulator Smooth-N-Hold Pudding not too long ago, right around the time that I did my first afro poof. In my first couple attempts at getting a nice and neat poof, I used my trusty Pro-style gel. The result was the not the same as it had been when my hair was relaxed. Not only was the gel residue messy by the end of the day, it also dried my hair out immensely. But, I figured because my hair had little to no straightness that a heavy gel would be my best bet. Not the case. So, I decided to take friend Tawanna's advice and try the Smooth-N-Hold Pudding. I even had some testers already in my bin from the ORS stand at the Bronner Brother's summer hair show. (Tip: Always grab the free testers that are offered in abundance during the hair show. It's how I've stumbled upon some of my staple products since I've been natural.) After washing my hair and allowing it to air dry, I applied some Elasta QP Mango Butter for moisture and a bit of extra virgin olive oil, and then smoothed a small scoop of the Smooth-N-Hold Pudding (just enough to fill the first section of my index finger) to the edges of my hair. The consistency is wonderfully light and just a little of it went a long way. I tied my hair up for about 20 minutes and continued to get ready, and that was just enough time to set my hair for a neat but still natural look. I loved it!

Since that time, I have also discovered the ORS Edge Control, which is a perfect compliment to smoothing pudding. I recommend both products, whether you are just touching up the edges of your afro or twist out, or pulling it up.
